Illawarra coach Rob Beveridge has addressed speculation surrounding his future, declaring he doesn’t know if tomorrow’s clash with New Zealand will be his final game in charge of the Hawks.
Beveridge is out of contract at the end of the season, with his current four-year stint in Illawarra yielding a Grand Final appearance in 2017 and a Semi-Final berth in 2016.
With the rumour mill heating up, Beveridge has provided an update on his future plans in a column published in the Illawarra Mercury.
“It’s no secret that I’m off-contract at the end of this season,” Beveridge wrote.
“People naturally have questions but, the truth is, I don’t have those answers yet myself.
“What I can say right now is that I have 100 per cent, hand-on-heart, not made any decision on what I will do beyond our game against New Zealand on Thursday.
“There’s a lot of rumours out there but it’s people putting two and two together and getting five.
“I’ve said all along that I won’t look at it until the season’s over and that remains the case.
“However, I work in professional sport and there’s a level of uncertainty in that you have to accept.
“There’s no guarantee I’ll be coaching the Hawks next season, there’s no guarantee I’ll be coaching at all.
“My manager will be talking with the club and his job is to look at all options.
“The club has to do its due diligence as well and decide what’s best for the Hawks organisation going forward.”
Beveridge would go on to explain why he hasn’t made an in-season decision, believing waiting until the Hawks’ campaign is officially over is the better move.
“It’s very hard to make an unemotional decision in-season, no matter how it’s panning out for you,” he wrote.
“It can really come back and bite you on the bum.
“When the time comes, I will sit down with my wife and make an unemotional decision about what’s best for myself and our family.
“That’s always been my number one priority.”
Beveridge added his decision won’t be a financial one, saying if it was, he would have never signed with the Hawks.
Despite an underwhelming 2018/19 campaign, Beveridge praised Illawarra’s culture, saying he has enjoyed the past four seasons, regardless of his next move.
“For me it’s about being in an environment where you’re happy to turn up to work every day and work hard,” Beveridge wrote.
“All my decisions have been about securing that.
“It’s been a wonderful, wonderful journey here. It may continue, it may not, but if I was chasing money I wouldn’t be here. I think I’ve proven my loyalty and commitment to the club.
“It’s been a frustrating year, it’s been up and down but I love these guys, they’re terrific people and we’ve hung together in tough times and shown immense character.”
